While I was out fishing with kids last Saturday, Steve Stewart was boarding a research vessel on Lake Huron. Steve, and MSU Extension district Sea Grant educator, has embarked on a week-long adventure with 15 teachers and several researchers who will study Lake Huron aboard the 180 foot EPA research vessel Lake Guardian.
The Lake Huron Shipboard and Shoreline Science workshop began July 25 at Hart Plaza, and will make its way north through the Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, the St. Clair River and Lake Huron ports of call. The educators will conduct research alongside scientists while learning about ecology and lake systems.
Participants are from as far away as Duluth, Minnesota, and King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, and I’m especially proud to report that four are from the Detroit Public Schools. They’ll benefit from knowledge shared by Mary Bohling, MSUE fisheries and wildlife educator, and MSU sr. geography specialist Dave Lusch (who will join the group via Webinar).
The Shipboard and Shoreline Science expedition is a component of the Center for Ocean Science Education Excellence (COSEE) Great Lakes program supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the Great Lakes Sea Grant Network. You can read more about the group’s adventure’s on the COSEE Great Lakes blog.
