Walk raises awareness of working mothers’ breastfeeding challenges

August is Breastfeeding Awareness Month and Michigan State University and the MSU Extension Breastfeeding Initiative (BFI) Mother to Mother Peer Program came out to celebrate with the second annual Breastfeeding Awareness Walk. This year’s theme, “Breastfeeding: Making It Work,” highlights the importance of supporting our employed breastfeeding mothers. Sheilah Hebert, MSUE BFI associate program leader, says that when working moms can continue breastfeeding, everybody wins. She explains that babies have fewer illnesses, mothers have fewer sick days to care for their infants and companies benefit from decreased employee turnover and lower health care costs.
