Joining 4-H and Alumni at the MSU Women’s Basketball Game

More than 4,500 4-H youth, their families, and Michigan State University (MSU) Extension staff members and their families attended the MSU Women’s Basketball game Jan. 22.

For the first time, Michigan 4-H alumni and the Michigan 4-H Foundation also hosted an event for 4-H alumni. More than 60 people from across the state attended the event and enjoyed food, coloring for kids, games, a Spartan Selfie Station, a visit from Sparty and general networking. We hope this is the first of many successful alumni events.

At halftime, 4-H’ers from Ingham, Macomb, Oakland and Saginaw counties made their way to the court. They were joined by Patrick Cudney, associate director of MSU Extension, and Julie Chapin, Children and Youth Institute director, as they proudly led the 4-H pledge:

I pledge my head to clearer thinking,
my heart to greater loyalty,
my hands to larger service,
and my health to better living,
for my club, my community, my country and my world.

Youth stand on the court with Julie Chapin and Patrick Cudney and lead the pledge.

Youth from Ingham, Macomb, Oakland and Saginaw counties lead the 4-H pledge with Julie Chapin and Patrick Cudney.

Thank you to everyone who came together to make the alumni event and the 4-H Day at the Breslin so successful!

Where does 4-H grow leaders? Right here in Michigan

At the 4-H Day at the Breslin event, we launched the new awareness and recruitment campaign for 4-H in Michigan: 4-H Grows Here. I am excited about this new campaign and wanted to share with you a little bit about it and let you know how important it is.

Our Michigan 4-H campaign matches the national campaign launched in 2015 by the National 4-H Council, which illustrates all the positive development skills it fosters in its youth – creativity, courage, teamwork, determination, confidence and more. With a nod to its agricultural roots, the 4-H Grows Here brand also celebrates all the unique and diverse ways 4-H programming has expanded in the past 100 years. If you have a few minutes, watch this great video below that showcases 4-H history and future focus.

4-H Brand Essence video

Michigan is one of a handful of key partners selected by the National 4-H Council to help with the roll-out of the campaign, and we are excited to bring it to life in our state. That we were chosen to help with the roll-out is something to be proud of, and just another reminder of the national prestige that our MSU Extension 4-H staff, volunteers and participants have worked for and achieved.

Although the campaign will be used to showcase a number of life skills and traits, Michigan 4-H will join the national movement in 2016 to highlight a key asset 4-H helps to grow: true leaders. In addition to being the theme for the 4-H Day at the Breslin event, 4-H Grows True Leaders will also be the theme of the 2016 4-H Exploration Days. Michigan 4-H will be working throughout the year to highlight the many true leaders in our own state that were grown through 4-H.

Reserve your free tickets for 4-H Day at the Breslin

It’s not too late to get your free tickets to attend the Michigan State University Extension 4-H Day at the Breslin with the Lady Spartans that takes place Feb. 2 at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center. But you must hurry as tickets are almost gone. The MSU Lady Spartans will take on the Purdue University Boilermakers.

Last year, more than 5,400 fans affiliated with Michigan 4-H Youth Development and MSU Extension attended the eighth annual event, which helped our women’s basketball team earn the fifth highest attendance in their history.

Besides watching the game, 4-H’ers and their guests will be part of the action by taking part in a halftime recital of the 4-H pledge led by Michigan 4-H members at center court. Attendees can participate in 4-H-related activities and view displays celebrating Michigan 4-H. The event allows MSU Extension to showcase college athletics to 4-H members while showing off our programs to fans.

Attend wearing green and white 4-H and MSU Extension apparel to show your support. Admission is free for 4-H members and their families, 4-H volunteers and MSU Extension staff members and their families, but tickets are required and must be reserved by Jan. 27.

Start the year off right at 4-H Day at the Breslin

Last year, I wrote about the success of the 4-H Day at the Breslin with the Lady Spartans. More than 4,500 Michigan 4-H’ers and their families cheered the Michigan State University women’s basketball team on. Don’t miss out on the fun this season. The seventh annual celebration takes place Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012 when the Spartans face the Ohio State Buckeyes. The game starts at 4 p.m. Gates open at 2:30 to the public. However, Gate D will be open at 2 p.m. for the 4-H group.

Tickets are free for MSU Extension 4‑H youth and their families, 4-H volunteers, and MSU Extension staff and their families. It’s a great bargain, but you must order your free tickets by Jan. 9 in order to attend.

Order your tickets by clicking on this link: http://web2.msue.msu.edu/basketballtickets

This year’s theme celebrates 4-H’s Revolution of Responsibility, a movement for positive change in which 4-H youth make a difference where they live.
