Senior Extension educator selected as the 2015 Informal Science Educator

Steve Stewart

Stephen Stewart

The Board of the Michigan Science Teachers Association (MSTA) has announced that Stephen Stewart has been selected as the 2015 Informal Science Educator. The winner was chosen for unique and extraordinary accomplishments, active leadership, scholarly contributions and direct and substantial contributions to the improvement of nonschool-based science education over a significant period of time. Employed by Michigan State University Extension since 1977, Stephen is a senior educator with Michigan Sea Grant Extension.

“This award does mean a lot to me because I think it’s always very rewarding and gratifying when your peers and your constituents are the ones giving you the awards,” he said. “No way is it a one-way award, because what I’ve accomplished I’ve done with the help of my Extension colleagues and my other colleagues in the Michigan Science Teachers Association.”

Stephen will be honored at an awards ceremony during a special dinner at the 2015 MSTA Conference in February 2015. We are proud of his accomplishments and thankful for his continued dedication.

MSUE educators receive distinguished staff awards

Two Michigan State University Extension senior educators, Thomas Dudek and Stephen Stewart, received MSU Distinguished Academic Staff Awards at the annual MSU State of the University Convocation. We celebrated with them at a pre-award reception in the Agriculture Hall Atrium Feb. 8.

The award recognizes the outstanding achievements of academic specialists and MSU Extension academic staff members who serve the university in advising, curriculum development, outreach, extension, research and teaching.

Tom Dudek has consistently supported the university’s land-grant mission to advance outreach, engagement and economic development by always looking for research-based opportunities to improve the greenhouse, nursery and vegetable industries. The growth these industries have experienced over the past 30 years is in part due to his ongoing efforts as a talented MSU Extension educator.

Tom’s commitment to MSU and his profession are evident in the many roles he has played on committees as both a member and leader. He is highly respected by his clientele, peers and industry professionals.

Steve Stewart works every day to advance the mission of Michigan Sea Grant, a joint effort between MSU and the University of Michigan, and MSU Extension’s mission. He works to understand the issues, needs and opportunities in Michigan’s coastal communities and apply university resources to address those issues. He has continued his professional development, learning new skills and adopting new technologies and developing appropriate, creative processes to help people learn new things that will promote greater stewardship of the Great Lakes and marine resources.

Steve has worked with a wide range of stakeholders to address Great Lakes issues, broaden their knowledge, develop new skills and improve their lives and communities. Steve is particularly noted for his work in educating youth from urban communities about the tremendous resources we have in the Great Lakes. He teaches and programs at a high-quality level and develops long-lasting relationships with his partners.

Congratulations to both educators. I’m proud to serve with them as Extension professionals.
